Jenn Ferris – Volunteer of the Month May 2019
Jenn Ferris has played for so many different Funnies for Families audiences, including a group of 200 employee’s of Covenant House Toronto, a homeless youth shelter. Jenn is a supportive improvisor, a loyal volunteer and a wonderfully funny person. We’re lucky to have her on our team of volunteers!
We asked Jenn Ferris some questions so you can get to know her better, read below!
1. What is your favourite thing about volunteering with Funnies?
Often being a performer and comedian can feel really self-indulgent, something selfish and frivolous that doesn’t contribute to society at large. Funnies with Family helps remind me that there’s so much healing with laughter and often we just need a good laugh! I’m so happy and honoured that I get to give back with my craft in this way.
2. What do you do outside of volunteering?
A whole bunch! I’m constantly working on projects and auditioning for film & TV stuff, I work part-time at TIFF (festival being my favourite season) and work a lot with the Canadian Improv Games as a Regional Producer of the GTA region and Camp Coordinator of Improv U. I also love painting. I paint a lot!
3. What is your favourite time of year?
Summer! Bring on the blue skies, green trees, and warm sun rays!
4. What is something that makes your family special?
One half of my family immigrated to Canada over 200 yrs ago from Ireland and the other half immigrated from the UK in the 60s. So I have this wonderful mix of old and new – keeps me open to adventure but I know no matter how far I go, my incredibly supportive family is there.
5. Who are your favourite comedians? Let’s say top three. Local or beyond.
Oooh… so hard because Toronto has a crazy amount of talent.
Right now I am crushin’ on the entire cast of She the People. They have a new show – go see it, it’s amazing!
Mark Little has always been someone who’s comedic style and drive I have admired.
Third is Amy Poehler, someone who has such a kind heart and I think she makes the world a better place through her work. She’s someone I aspire to be like.
